Drugs, drunk driving, rape, alcohol, depression, abuse cycles, addiction, self-harm and eating disorders are the risks we all want to avoid. Maintaining confidence and empowerment is difficult as children enter their tween and teen years. Even teenagers who appear confident can feel a bit downtrodden inside. Let’s do our best to prevent disasters by developing the inner strength to make and stand by their good decisions.

Listen to them. Your tween or teen might need some assurance or guidance with confidence issues if they communicate, or you notice:

  • They seem uncomfortable in social situations and look for reasons to avoid them
  • Seem to be casting about for their “purpose”
  • Tend to dwell on the past instead of the present or future
  • Have a negative self-perception
  • Seem to be “stuck” in a rut that they can’t get out of
  • Are never vulnerable or open
  • Seem lethargic
  • Have terrible association

High school and the teen years are a tough time. Inside, tweens and teens are a swirl of hormones that are new to them. They feel confused by still feeling like a kid, but wanting to become adults. They become victims of their peers who can have a plethora of issues that your child did not have.

For years, I have been helping young adults develop confidence and inner strength that can help them weather the storms that rage inside and around them. This confidence can keep them off drugs and alcohol, make wise decisions, and excel at life.

Nicole was a perfectly normal girl. Like most people, she was attractive but not a supermodel. Smart, but not a prodigy. Her mother noticed, though, that as she entered her teens, she was withdrawing and seemed a bit depressed.

Her mom contacted me based on the recommendation of a friend. I started talking to Nicole and she was a bit stand-offish. That’s okay. I was too, at her age. She even cried at our first meeting.

After a while, she realized that I was sincerely there to help her. Soon, she started talking to me about what was bothering her. From an adult perspective, they weren’t issues, but from Nicole’s point of view they were super big.

I worked with Nicole to understand what she was feeling and how to fill her life with healthy goal oriented activities and friends. I gave her a bunch of tools, like healthy eating and some other tricks I have learned. Toda, ten years later, Nicole is my beautiful adult successful cherished friend and I’m still close with her and her family.

I once weighed more than 165 pounds more than I do now. In a society that values thin, I had to summon my own confidence to overcome my challenges. The ways that I learned to pull myself up, lose the weight, and help others were what I taught Nicole.

The way it works:

Typically, a teen’s or tweens parents will contact me and ask for my help.

I will get in contact with the young adult and build a rapport. I’m not a doctor, therapist or psychologist. (I do, however, get referrals from those professionals.) I know what it feels like to need inner strength and I have made a career out of teaching others to regain their confidence.

Our course of work can last for a few weeks or a few months or longer, depending on the young person’s needs.

I work with this population often, on an offline, so I’m “in the know” about their world, including social media.
