Oooh La La, Let's go to Paris! Here are some…
San Antonio – New York City!
It’s all about how you say San Antonio…
That commercial was also probably the only reason I went to San Antonio, so I could say it out loud like that :).
Here are my healthy happy travel
tips for visiting San Antonio:
- You gotta get your “ya’all” and the plural “all ya’all” on.
- Check the weather, it’s not always 72-75 degrees F there, but when you go, you want it to be.
- Stay in a hotel on the Riverwalk.
- Don’t eat on the Riverwalk.
- Walk the Riverwalk in the morning and and again in the evening when it’s beautifully lit.
- Bring a rain jacket.
- Take a car or cab to find better food than the repetitive “fajitas and margaritas” offered on the Riverwalk.
The Riverwalk impressed. Like the bridges of Venice Italy combined with the craftsmanship and cleanliness of Disneyland!
Impressive glass art from Garcia on the Riverwalk. The mood of Chihuly, however her pieces contain more florals if you really look. She has another gallery in town. http://www.yelp.com/biz/garcia-art-glass-inc-san-antonio-2
I enjoyed seeing a lot of ducks in and around the river at the Riverwalk. However, there is a lot of duck on the menus of those “fajitas and margaritas” restaurants. Hmmm…
Note to self, don’t be a duck at the Riverwalk.
Here are my healthy happy vegan food reviews/recommendations:
Senior Veggie Review
If you like lime and cilantro, don’t miss Senior Veggie. I LOVE this combo as it transported me to Caribbean Latin America. There is a choice here for all flavor lovers. I stared with the Lettuce Wraps, this is really a giant salad and it’s fantastic, but it’s really a giant kale salad served on romaine leaves. Just forget about wrapping and you’ll be fine. Avocado Mango Salad, was not really a salad, it’s really mango guacamole/salsa and chips. The mango guac was great. StreetStreet Tacos, which are really amazing Jackfruit Tacos—don’t miss this!. With the Mushroom Barley soup….amazeballs. Daily Tamale Special, served with their Lentil Chili on top, and rice and beans. What a plate! Hibiscus Tea Agua Fresca and Special Cucumber lime Agua Frescas (very refreshing and hydrating). Finishing with the world’s most decadent chewy fudge like vegan brownie. The space is very mexy and fun with art photos of mexico against a southwestern color palate. I ate there twice—second time the Aqua was Pineapple Ginger! All in all my DO NOT MISS picks are: Agua Frescas, Portobello Fajitas, Tamales if they have them, Street Tacos and the Mushroom Barley soup, for a salad get the lettuce wraps, and for a healthy dish the Good Karma Bowl was awesome. Knock yourself out w/a dessert. Everything here is fresh and fantastic! I also bought a shirt with a pink carrot on it!
It’s been awhile since I wrote this and I’m still thinking about those Jackfruit Tacos!
The Cove Review
If you are in San Antonio, do NOT miss The Cove. Though it’s known for burgers, fish tacos and local beer on tap, they have some clearly marked vegan choices and healthy choices that were super delicious!
I walked to The Cove from Riverwalk, really far to get there. It got dark, and it’s not in a nice part of town (I got a cab after my meal so I didn’t walk back the same way). The people at and around The Cove, probably don’t live around there and I think they were having some school fundraiser party (fundraiser auction and photo booth with happy kids running around playing everywhere). The Cove was touted on HappyCow for great vegan food and when I approached I could hear the excellent music.
The surprise is that it’s SO SO CLOSE to one of those DIY carwashes (with the coin vacuums and all), I mean really close. You have to walk through the carwash (like you can get sprayed close..LOL. I think I saw a homeless man vacuuming himself with the coin op vac on my way in.)
Then I found out, it IS a carwash. It’s also a laundry mat! It’s a unique large property and it’s got a beachfront vibe, and though it’s really not in the best part of San Antonio, once you’re in the gates you are transported to a really cool beachy-blues environment.
The locals told me that The Cove started out as a carwash (and a laundry mat..I’m not sure what was there first), then they expanded little by little to the property and added an ice cream stand first, then sandwiches, then an outdoor bar with misters, but it was still too hot in the summer to be outside, so then they bought this big green house that is now the indoor bar. Today they are a SLO (Sustainable, Local, Organic) focused restaurant with a beer garden have an immense property with an indoor outdoor bar, and excellent band lineup, an amazing playground area in the garden area for the kids, tons of space with all kinds of picnic and indoor/outdoor seating choices with homemade planters and fun lighting. They are still a carwash and a laundry mat! I had some AWESOME vegan food. I tried the Vegan Bacon Cheeseburger with their Cashew Cheese, I had a Grilled Portobello Burger “naked style” (on salad w/sautéed spinach), Vegan Corn Gazpacho and a Kale Salad with Avocado and toasted Pumpkin Seeds—they have gluten free buns too-woo woo. I asked a lot of questions when I ordered and they were totally prepared. Quite an experience not to miss.
Their service is also TOP NOTCH. I had ordered a beet salad and they were out of beets and 3 people came to the table to ask me what I wanted, and we sorted it out with that kale salad. I’ve never seen a place like this, and it was a supercool space, food and experience. Let me know if you check it out!
