Please Don’t Feed the “I Can’t”s
The 3 M’s of Michele the Trainer are Motivation, Movement and Mindset…Let’s talk about one aspect of Michele Mindset…the YOU CAN DO THIS part!
Historically dieting and personal training have been condemning and often feed negative self talk. The media is full of quick fixes and psychologically the more of those we use, the more we are feeding that inner “I CAN’T DO THIS” demon.
The “you can’t do this without surgery or injections” is a pretty heavy message to absorb, and then plunk money down to support!! What is the example for the next generation? We are voting with our dollars to teach everyone that they can’t do it.
Don’t get me wrong, I get it. I was a fat kid. In the 70s/80s/90s I tried ALL the quick fixes that were available in those days. When I was fat kid, I lost a friend to a stomach stapling (the 70’s version). She was told not to drink after she had the surgery, and she did not stop, and that finished her in her 20’s. But hey, she died thinner. That clearly was not my goal.
I am here for YOU. I have lots of dear friends and very dear clients that I have embraced with open arms that have done the lap band. It’s my observation that without changing your food and fitness the results are temporary or never attained. I would never recommend anything with that caliber of consequence..it’s not my message. Everyone makes their own decisions, and I respect their journey. I also teach nutrition to a higher standard, if my clients want, to enhance their energy vim and vigor. At MTT, it’s not just about the number on the scale.
With training, you can see at the retail gyms condemning trainers…and you can see them on television. Trainers that have eating disorders or are sculpted with plastic surgery. Trainers that have voted for the “I can’t do this” and now they are selling you what? That you can’t do it either?
In the defense of the stereotype, they might not have any real experience with health issues, ortho issues or recovering from obesity, or they might just be a natural Kenyan body type. We all know kids that have amazing abs, and that usually hails from body type….not from some infomercial machine! If a fitness professional doesn’t understand you, if they don’t relate with any of your challenges, or if they are just an asshole, they might be condemning. I would not vote for them with my fitness dollars either.
Are you using some magic powdered shake? Do we know what’s in that magic powder? Are you taking an injection and do you really know what it contains and where it’s from? Pharma can come from pigs and horses…do you know if the animal kingdom is involved in your injection? Are you commanding millions of dollars as a runway model to justify that expense and risk?
I encourage you to ask some questions. Just like the labeling laws, you deserve to know what you are paying for, and how you are voting. Don’t vote your mindset into a corner of negativity. Surround yourself with the encouragement to do a bit of work, and enjoy the PRIDE of accomplishment that accompanies that. THAT is the message for the next generations.
Michele is on YOUR SIDE.
