Musical Chair Urgency Starring in, “What if I Can’t Get a Seat!?”

Musical chairs is a festival game starting with X number of chairs and one more person than chairs available.  The chairs are often arranged in a circle.  Music begins and participants walk the circle when the music goes on, and when the music stops, they must rush to find a seat.   The extra person without a seat is OUT.   When I was in elementary school, we played this at the Halloween carnival and that’s where I first felt that “OMG I MIGHT NOT GET A SEAT” urgent freak out stressful feeling.  Plus I was a fat kid, already uncomfortable at the candy festival,  and the musical chair prize was a cake, which could have only been worse if I was dressed like an ice cream cone.

I’m not a sales guru, but there is some very obvious fake urgency created by offering not enough space.   “Limited Space!” Like if a gym opens and you have to be on the waiting list, or there are 12 cycles in the cycle room but 20 people want to take the class, it’s a built in waiting game.   Does being on a waiting list make me a better person?  My goal is to workout, not to wait.  Will the cardio maniac giving me stink eye because she wants my machine help me attain fitness nirvana?  Are you signing up for waiting as an excuse to not workout?

A big gym is not going to help you find the time for fitness.  There is no ‘working with your schedule’ available.  They will not help you find a spot or get a seat or a bike.  It’s all about the urgency created by building something consciously too limited, to create that musical chair unnecessary stress/success vibe.

“I’m IN!”  Well if you’re in, then you’re special.  It’s like being in one of those VIP special boxes at sporting events, or the rental cabana by the spa pool with the wifi and television inside.

What about our friends in the animal kingdom?

“Snails, do you have this problem with shells?” we might ask.   Do snails  have to get on a waiting list to get the other guys shell?

One of the beautiful benefits of having a personal trainer, is efficient use of your time.  For my clients, they know when I arrive or knock on their door, we are ON.  There is no waiting around.  We get it done.  I have plan A, plan B, and plan C ready to go.  I have a plan for the rain. I have a plan for indoors or outdoors.  I have communication skills, the internet and a telephone to help me accommodate all things.

Goodbye musical chair stress.  If given a choice of waiting, or working out, I will choose efficient time management and movement all the time.   How about you?
