Listen to Your Body Part 2: Intensity and Recovery

fresh lady after workout

Above is an article called, “Why Four Workouts a Week May be Better Than Six”, which crossed my desk from a dear friend.  Thus the question is, “How many times a week should someone workout”

The correct comment is complicated, so here is Part 2 of 3.  Here is the link to Part 1, Should I Listen to my Body if my Body says, “Eat Bon Bons”?

The root has to do with Intensity and Recovery; Listening to your body.

  • How do you feel before your workout?
  • How intense is your workout?
  • How long does it take you to recover?
  • How do you feel after your workout

and the commercial annoying question, “Are You Exercising Hard Enough?‏”

Your workout should change as you change.  If you work full time, and your workout is causing you long recoveries it’s not practical.  Most people including myself have other tasks to do in a day than their own workout.

I do not advocate going “harder” just for the sake of saying that you went intense.  It’s not necessary and it’s not for everyone.  The goal is to feel great and energized, not to sleep all day recovering.

Less is not more, however, if you’re not doing much.  There is a time and benefit from relaxation (and even sleep of course) but that’s not a cardio or strength workout.

Ask yourself the questions listed above, and be honest with yourself about how you feel and your recovery.  If you have any questions, I’m here for you.  Look out for Part 3 of 3 of this answer/commentary!
