YES the Jicama Wraps “Tortillas” are GOOD -One Run to Trader Joe’s Series

Do YOU know what a Jicama is?  Let’s start there. If you don’t email me and I will explain.  I have some recipes with jicama in my books and that is how I know that not everyone in North America knows about this hydrating inexpensive and delicious crunchy vegetable.  Ask me anytime.

Jicama is like a not-sweet apple, almost like a giant not-sweet papple (apple pear).  OR sorta like a giant water chestnut.  It is fantastic cut up with lime and chili powder on it.

It is sometimes cut into a french fry shape, but friends, it is NOT a french fry.

Jicama is generally served cold and a wonderful snack in hot weather. Jicama is super satisfying because it’s heavy with water.

So I’m in Trader Joe’s one day that started out at a brisk 43 degrees F and what do I spy?  These cold tortilla looking wraps.  Hmm..

Pre-cut refrigerated veg can go off quickly.  I knew if I bought them, I was committed to eating them on the same day for maximum freshness.  Geez, was I ready for a new adventure?

Aww what the heck, let’s try!

  • They are thin
  • They fold
  • I heated a few in a pan with a bit of water and they warmed up fine
  • I heated a few with chili powder on them and just like normal jicama, they tasted great
  • BUT, heating maybe unnecessary.  You do not have to heat them.  If you want them warm and your filling is warm, you are A-OK

I created a bowl that included Quick and Dirty Taco Cauli Rice (below) and I heated some cooked potatoes cut up (think no oil sauteed breakfast potatoes with salt and pepper) and then created tacos from the bowl.  My bowl was shaped like a large pasta bowl so I could wrap my tacos about said bowl.

I love abundance so for your plant based jicama taco experience consider:

  • Avocado or guacamole
  • 1 package of Jicama Wraps per person
  • Quick and Dirty Taco Cauliflower Rice, recipe below (NOTE–after this recipe was ready before spooning it into the bowl I used a strainer to press all the liquid out of the Quick and Dirty Taco Cauli Rice so it would be taco-ready)
  • Sliced cilantro or lettuce (some taco green)
  • Diced onions, tiny
  • Olives
  • Red salsa if you add potatoes, or pico de gallo (recipe in my books)
  • Habanero salsa for the HOT HOT HOT lovers

BEANS, do not forget BEANS!
