Since Chitty Chitty I've wanted to have my very own…
Automotive Ethernet
Have you ever had a car or truck electrical problem? I have.
Automotive Ethernet will soon replace traditional automotive wiring harnesses.
As a network engineer (here we go I’m going to date myself) I started learning about Ethernet in the 80′s and in a lot more detail when I started attending IEEE meeting in the 90′s and 2000′s. Ethernet is a global standard that’s been around for over forty years, since 1973. The wire that looked like twisted pair, but wasn’t, was your push button phone cord (the telephone cables inside the wall in those days might have been real twisted pair). A better example of an authentic twisted pair cables, are the cable that connects your computer to the internet.
The Lights are ON!
Through the years I’ve done a lot of off-road driving to get to isolated beautiful beaches for SCUBA diving, and the shaking of washboard dirt road driving never supported traditional automotive electrical wiring. I’m not saying Ethernet will be 4×4 proof, but we are past due improving this wiring mess just to turn on a headlight. Automotive Ethernet is the ONLY good Enabler:
More bandwidth! As cars need more and more bandwidth, Automotive Ethernet provides a standard low cost way of improving bandwidth. It’s going to enable all those other cool features we want from newer vehicles, like Infotainment and Autonomous Cars.
Initially the internals where Ethernet will be used include:
- Driver Assistance and Safety, like BMW’s Surround View
- HMI (Human Machine Interface) which offers control of all the Infotainment features, and allows connectivity via Bluetooth and Wireless. An example is GM’s OnStar remote support system which is integrated into the car’s HMI system.
Overtime, Ethernet will find it’s way into:
- Powertrain is the domain of the car that generates power and includes the obvious engine, transmission, shafts, and wheels. Powertrain also includes many other sensors and controls that nerds like to view on their in car monitors.
- Chassis includes brakes, steering and suspension
- Body & Comfort includes heating & A/C, seat controls, window controls, lights
NerdNote: Right now there is no spec for Automotive Ethernet. The OPEN alliance is working on this (One Pair EtherNet).
