5 Reasons Fad Diets Don’t Work
You want to lose weight fast.
I know you want the quick fix.
I know you want to believe what the advertising says. I used to believe it too. That’s why I wrote this wooden nickel post:
http://www.engineeringwellness.com/mindset/aftertaste-of-wooden-nickel-sawdust
I did a lot of these fad programs and they did not work for me. I know a good amount of people and I don’t know anyone who has any lasting healthy results with a fad diet.
I do not recommend living on a fad diet food plan, especially packaged and processed shakes, bars and pills.
I lost a lot of weight. But that’s not that special really. We all know how to lose weight. There are many unhealthy ways to lose weight on the scale, including drugs (street and unnecessary pharmaceuticals). Ponder that. Think of examples of skinny celebrities or rock stars that you have seen over the years that you can tell are visibly not strong or healthy, or clearly strung out.
Keeping it off is the tough part. Especially in a world where every diabetes 2 causing food is shoved in our faces; constantly marketed to you on every bus, bus bench, billboard and sponsored sports event. Junky food is unavoidable. Junky food disguised as NATURAL food is becoming more and more prevalent. You have to stay informed (or I can handle some of that for you) but you need the MOTIVATION to stay in the MINDSET of making better choices.
Michele the Trainer doesn’t encourage packaged food. Because it doesn’t serve you.
5 Reasons Why Fad Diets Don’t Work:
1. No experience. Most (ok all that I’ve experienced but I’ll give this a MOST in favor of those I don’t know) fad diet salespeople don’t really know about health or weight loss. Maybe they just lost 40 pounds and are all hyped up to sell you on the same fad, but they haven’t kept it off for even 30 days. Maybe they’ve picked up exercise, and are trying to fuel a long distance running habit with those little bitty processed caffeinated shakes and bars. “But we’re not like that,” they say. They really just don’t know what they don’t know. Often they are regurgitating the pitch they were taught. I’m the bad guy for pointing it out. Oh well. I’m the advocate for YOUR best interest.
2. Toxic Chemical Ingredients that can cause food allergies, or even diseases of lifestyle. Diabetes is considered a disease of lifestyle, for example. Ingredients to turn chemicals into little bar shapes and into little capsules can include fillers that can be plastics even! You know those little packets when you buy a camera that fall to the bottom of the box and say, “DO NOT EAT”, well even that stuff can be an ingredient! Sugars disguised (which sometimes are not counted in the Sugars count), including maltodextin, can contribute to Diabetes, for example. Do a roll call for gluten. We all know about gluten allergies/gluten intolerance and celiac complications nowadays. Many of these fad diet “kits” contain packaged foods with these crappy ingredients and more that we learned to avoid generations ago when we were driving Pintos/from the 1970’s–like shellac and MSG.
3. Living on shakes and bars is like robot food. If you stick to a space age plan it’s a recipe for an eating disorder. I’m not an expert here, but I’ve observed many robot food eaters over time. Not as fun or cute as robot food sounds. I know it seems cool in a science fiction sort of way, but we can’t just eat a breakfast or lunch capsule. How will eating that little square or shake make you feel at the holiday meal table? Feeling deprived can get into your head and that’s just not a good plan. Deprivation after a holiday meal can cause a binge (after the family gathering the dieter drives through for some toxic greasy fried fast food, in the dark). We know that’s not a step in the right direction.
4. Living on packages can support an UNHEALTHY lifestyle, the opposite of my mission!
We need real nutrients to feed our real bodies, bones and muscles. For example, my hair is real and is getting better instead of worse, as I age. Many have the misfortune to have lost hair due to chemotherapy, etc, but I also know plenty of women that have lost their hair due to eating disorders, starvation or malnutrition. Living on robot food (which can be full of refined sugar like eating candy) will eat up your teeth too. I don’t have xray vision so I don’t really know what’s happening to the bones, but often this population can be observed wearing a lower body bone supporting cast. I never said that this robot food eating population is always thin, either. You can eat this packaged food, gain or not lose weight and still be stealing nutrients from your bones/teeth/muscles/hair. Processed foods can cause malabsorption over time. We should strive to avoid side effects that are not necessary.
5. If any Weight was Lost, It Doesn’t Last
One bar leads to two bars, and then a bar binge due to the refined sugar spike from the sugary ingredients. They are cookies disguised as health products. Because they don’t make you full, it’s easy to inhale that entire box of little packaged robot bars.

How Do I Know?
I did a lot of these programs! Yes Michele the Trainer did the shakes/pills/vitamins/bars 20 years ago and that’s how I know first hand that it doesn’t work (unless you want to hate yourself long term…reference point 4). Now I eat delicious food and manage my weight. This is what I teach my clients, and that’s one of the Michele the Trainer differences.
Today there are some higher snack choices out there. I’m not saying to never enjoy a healthy organic bar or shake here and there. I’m not saying to never take an organic seed bar on hike. But I will not encourage you to LIVE on them, not even for a week or couple of weeks. YOU are not a robot.
LIVE fabulous and delicious..not deprived.
LIVE the Life you want today the Michele the Trainer Way.
