“Smart for Then or Smart for Now? ” Rick Grimes, Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 13

I choose Smart for Now!

One of my fantastic clients recently introduced me as Michele the Trainer an amazing Entreprennaire (extraordinary entrepreneur).  That intro meant a lot to me.  It takes a lot of work to keep up with the changes on the internet alone. I attribute that compliment to my healthy lifestyle, which enables me to think youthfully and energetically.  A cerebral compliment is far more valuable to me than a physical one.

When Rick said this to Michonne on this week’s episode, I laughed out loud.  We are completely required to be a new kind of smart.  Are you onboard?

If you resonate with The Walking Dead then you either love hope or you’re probably some kind of survivor, or both.  Their little misfit family is all about hope and survival.  Maybe you survived a disease?  Maybe you survived your childhood?  Maybe you survived the economy?  Maybe a layoff? Maybe a bad relationship?  I’ll bet you too want to be, or hope to be, Smart for Now.

Anyway, here are some thoughts on being Smart for Then or Smart for Now:

  1. Health.  Smart for Now means responsibility, a healthy lifestyle and best effort prevention.  Smart for Then means eating everything advertised on TV from the 1950’s and going broke while dying of a potential disease of lifestyle due to poor eating and lack of exercise.
  2. Restaurants.  Smart for Now means offering all dietary preferences including allergy menu choices such as gluten free.  Smart for Then means you don’t know what vegan means and you will become an antique business because families cannot eat together at your establishment.
  3. Income.  Smart for Now means multiple income streams.  Smart for Then means you work at one job forever and if that job is at Radio Shack then you’re in trouble.
  4. Publishing.  Smart for Now means self publishing.  Smart for Then means waiting forever to get “discovered” and we might die with that manuscript in our cold clammy hands.
  5. Work.  Smart for Now means telecommuting for and with people smart enough to see the benefits.  Smart for Then means being visible (rather than productive or effective) for a 1950’s type middle manager.
  6. Meetings.  Smart for Now means virtual meetings.  Smart for Then means unnecessary inefficient in person meetings over poor quality food that people feel obligated to eat because they paid for it.  (Sometimes a real in person meeting is necessary but often they are not).
  7. Entertainment/TV.  Smart for Now means on demand.  Smart for Then means cable TV which there is no real reason to pay for anymore unless it’s bound to your internet. Millennials don’t pay for TV, ask them.
  8. Locally.  Smart for Now means supporting everything you can sustainably and locally (think SLO Sustainable Local Organic).  Smart for Then means you didn’t have the information disclosed to make a better choice.  Small businesses are creating jobs and Local businesses make up the communities where we live.
  9. Globally.  Smart for Now means considering everything globally.  Smart for Then meant our only global exposure was It’s a Small World at Disneyland.
  10. Consciously. Smart for Now considers resources, energy, the environment, the climate and the planet.  Smart for Then?  Well, there really wasn’t much Smart for Then, but there is no excuse now.
