Dancing on the Bar of the Hard Rock CafeBucharest Romania

Bucharest Romania

By Michele the Trainer

I was invited to dance on the bar of the Hard Rock Café in Bucharest Romania by their kind wild fun staff.  If I die tomorrow I did that.  Wearing flip flops,  I walked miles (about 5km one way) to get there from my hotel, towards Parcul Herastrau, which is a HUGE park with water features, bicycle rentals and more, past several museums, and finally arrived at the Hard Rock.  The staff was wonderful and the memorabilia the best I’ve seen at any Hard Rock, including some exciting Beatles pieces:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAYep that’s me in the Jedi shirt.

Do not miss the Parcul Herastrau (shown above)!  It’s more than a walk in the park. You will need a car to see all of this park.

The Palace of the Parliament:

Palace Of The Parliament In Bucharest, Romania

Parliament is the epic attraction in Bucharest.  Everyone wants to see the parliament building in Bucharest.  My visit was in September/October and it was hot. I wore summer clothes and sandals for the entire trip.  Since the weather was outstanding, I went all around the outside but I never did tour the inside, but you will want to.  The palace is opulent and as large underground as it is above the ground, which is immense.

Museums:

Museum remain on my to-do list for Bucharest, as there were many greats.  I enjoyed the Natural History Grigore Antipa National Museum and Peasant Museums.  You can spend days in their museums, and still not see it all.  Interesting art and history including embroidered textiles boasting so much detail that you can really dive in.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_museums_in_Bucharest

Shopping?

Bucharest has super luxury malls. Blew my mind as they were much nicer than any mall I’ve ever seen anywhere.  The AFI Palace Cotroceni is a mega mall touting a roller coaster suspended from the ceiling, a full size ice rink inside and an IMAX theater.  All your brands are there and set in glass and brass.  Only the new Charles De Gaulle Airport in France is fancier.  Look at this:

Where to Stay?

I stayed in the lovely boutique hotel Epoque.

The hotel was fantastic with very spacious rooms and comfortable beds.  This property boasts some features that we don’t even have in California’s finest stays.

From the time I left California, I had to find out about the Emotional Shower, a hotel spa feature advertised on the hotel website.

The hotel spa included a small indoor pool with warm wonderful water (about 80 degree F water) and 3 giant external fountain spouts that spray into the pool.  Underwater were multiple spa jets and colored lights.  Those spouts offer serious waterfall-like massage streams of warm water.

The spa also has dry sauna, steam and then finally the Emotional Shower.

There are 2 special showers that share the Emotional Shower area:

  1. A cold shower, with a fixture that fills and when you pull a little chain literally dumps a bucket of cold water over you.  Whew! (maybe they should call that the Expletive Shower)
  2. The Emotional Shower with a full body multidirectional showerhead, which recruited all 4 walls and the ceiling, colored lights and 4 buttons (massage, rain, fog and something else). We can assume that those weather choices are its emotions.  Mystery solved!

Epoque also had classic looking bicycles that you could borrow to ride around the Cismigiu Gardens.  Cismigiu had awesome peacocks in the garden.  I spent a lot of time there with the locals enjoying their fine park.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ci%C8%99migiu_Gardens

Smoke Free?

Epoque was one of the few smoke free places I encountered on the trip.  It did not smell like smoke anywhere.

Workout?

If you want a gym you can get a day pass from the gym that shares with the Radisson Blu Bucharest, World Class Health Academy.  The Radisson is a wonderful property too and offers two swimming pools: http://www.radissonblu.com/hotel-bucharest

Where to Eat?

Caru’ Cu Bere http://www.carucubere.ro/en/

Do not miss this unique historic restaurant.  I did not eat at Caru Cu Bere but I should have.  Their menu has a large variety with some great choices.  Sadly I found it after eating somewhere else!  The architecture inside is not to be missed. I don’t think I’ve ever seen more beautiful woodwork, including an amazing spiral staircase that imprinted a lifelong memory.  It’s a crowded fun place. This is a MUST SEE.

Casa Satya http://www.happycow.net/reviews/casa-satya-bucharest-15198

I did eat a few times at the vegan friendly Casa Satya.  They have colorful outdoor patio seating with an exotic feel and sparkling lighting in the evenings.  I loved their butterscotch brownies.  I recommend taking a car here after dark.

I found a lot of healthy Mediterranean food around town and produce was easy to find.

Plan Your Trip:

Remember to check the weather. There were too many museums for me to see, so check the details and hours before you go, so you don’t miss anything.  Taxis are everywhere in the center, there is a Hop-On, Hop-Off Bus and fast underground trains too.  You will enjoy seeing the Arcul de Triumf often during your trip.

Bon Voyage!
