Don’t Add Weights to What you Cannot Do

Welcome to your new class.  We will call it “Gym Trend Class”…everyone is doing it, so we better do it too.  This class could prepare you for that other trendy class taught down the street …we will call that system “Competitive Community of Overuse Injuries”.  Anyway, let’s cross that bridge when we get there, injury free.

If it has weight and if it travels towards gravity, it is a weight.  For example, anything heavy with lead in it, will be considered a weight for today’s example.  Yes, even in the water.  Anchors are a weight in the water that still comply with gravity.

Everyone in “Gym Trend Class” has Weights (dumbbells, kettlebells*, etc.).  We better get some too.

Then the teacher shows us to do this, and that, and this and that.  We are rocking out and we do this and that and this and that, but uh oh, here comes side plank with a kettlebell*.  Side plank is only an example.  Kettlebell* is only an example.

PLEASE do not load (with weight) any exercise that you cannot retain correct form without weight.  I’m not saying you can never do it, but I invite you to please practice first without adding weight/load and LATER add the weight.  Start without adding load, and live to enjoy training another day. Any Questions?  Your body already has weight, and gravity does exist!

We might be thinking, “Gee, I gotta get to work, I have laundry to do, I still didn’t wash the dog, and I’m taking this class because I enjoy not having to think about my workout.  This is really tough, but I better keep my weight because the teacher said so.  Steroid guy kept his weights, so maybe I should too?  Hey why are they taping up people’s shoulders over there in the corner?  Someone feed that lady a cupcake.  Wow I really like this song!  Gee my shoulder blade and bicep really hurt and burn…”

Well, you are now empowered to say “MICHELE THE TRAINER SAID NOT TO ADD WEIGHT” to whatever particular exercise, is not YOUR exercise.  We are all different, and I encourage you to master your world of movement, and if it hurts please don’t do it.

*I train myself and others with Kettlebells, but I avoid sharing workout space with others who use them… you can read why here:

You can have fun, get in shape and live to train another day!
